Bespoke Cabin Design: The Foundation of Life Space Cabins

Bespoke cabin design is where it all began for us. It remains at the core of what we do: creating spaces that push the boundaries of cabin design through thoughtful architecture, practical function and carefully considered detail. While we now offer a range of ready-to-build cabins, it’s our bespoke projects that truly drive our passion for creating distinctive, one-of-a-kind spaces.

We work with private clients, hospitality businesses and landowners to design cabins that bring together creativity, craftsmanship and real build expertise: each project shaped by its site, its purpose and the opportunity to create something entirely unique.

The Life Space Approach

We design and build cabins that are shaped by their surroundings, their purpose and the people who will use them: from one-off private retreats to multi-cabin developments for landowners and hospitality projects. Every project begins with the land and evolves into a carefully considered space that is both beautiful and buildable.

Design-led, build-informed
We approach every project with an architectural mindset, grounded in real construction knowledge: ensuring each design is as practical as it is visually striking.

Bespoke where it matters
Every cabin is shaped around its site and use, with the flexibility to create one-off spaces or develop designs that can be thoughtfully repeated across multiple plots.

Playful design, without limits
We love bringing personality into our cabins. If you have an idea, however ambitious or unconventional, we’ll explore how to make it work and make it work well.

One team, from concept to completion
With designers, carpenters and project managers working closely together, we maintain a clear and consistent vision from first sketch through to installation on site.

Spaces that enhance how people live and stay
Whether it’s a private retreat, a guest cabin or a hospitality space, we design cabins that are not only beautiful, but genuinely enjoyable to spend time in.

Crafted with intent
Materials, detailing and finishes are carefully considered to create spaces that feel refined, durable and made to last.

The Process …

See how we guide you from early ideas to the creation of your dream cabin space: from luxury retreats to off-grid escapes and everything in between.

01Site Understanding & Early Feasibility

Exploring the character of the land, including access, orientation, constraints and opportunities to shape the most suitable cabin approach for the site. This stage typically begins with you sharing initial site photographs or video footage. From there, we usually recommend a site visit from one of our specialist team members to carry out a feasibility study and gain a deeper understanding of the landscape and project potential.

02Concept Design

Developing the architectural vision for your cabin by exploring layout, form, materials and how the building will sit within the landscape. It’s helpful to come to us with a mood board or references that capture the styles and spaces you’re drawn to, as this helps guide the early direction of the design. From there, you’ll work closely with our illustrators and designers to translate your ideas into initial concept visuals and a working prototype of your potential dream space.

03Developed Design

Refining the concept into a fully resolved scheme, including spatial planning, architectural detailing and interior direction. At this stage, our designers work closely with you to shape the finer aspects of the project: from material choices and internal finishes to distinctive features that give the cabin its unique character.

This is where the design really begins to take shape. Ideas are developed into carefully considered, buildable spaces, ensuring the cabin not only looks beautiful but functions seamlessly. By the end of this stage, the project has evolved from an early concept into a cohesive design ready to move forward toward construction.

04Gaining the Right Permissions

There are various routes to get planning permission. These will vary based on geographical location, Local Authority and site feasibility.

We offer guidance where we use our experience to make an appropriate application for you. Where an application is beyond our level of expertise, we’ll recommend a third party planning consultant to guide us. This will give your project the best chance of gaining planning permission.

05Technical Design & Build Coordination

Working closely with our in-house team and trusted partners, we ensure the design translates smoothly from concept into construction. At this stage, drawings and details are refined so that every element of the cabin is practical, buildable and ready for delivery.

Once the project is signed off, your cabin moves into the hands of our operations team and dedicated project managers, who oversee the build process from workshop to site. With years of experience delivering bespoke cabins, we pride ourselves on a build process that is efficient, professional and reliable, ensuring the finished space reflects the quality and intent of the original design.

06Step Inside…

What is bespoke cabin design?

Bespoke cabin design is the process of designing a cabin entirely from scratch to suit a specific site, client vision and intended use. Rather than adapting a pre-existing model, every aspect of the building: from layout and scale to materials and architectural details — is carefully developed around the landscape and the way the space will be used.

At Life Space Cabins, our bespoke design process allows clients to create truly unique spaces, whether that’s a luxury private retreat, a guest cabin, or bespoke glamping cabins for hospitality projects. The result is a cabin that feels thoughtfully integrated into its surroundings and tailored to your exact requirements.

Who are bespoke cabin builds best suited for?

Bespoke cabin design is ideal for projects where a standard model simply won’t deliver the right outcome. By designing from scratch, we can respond directly to the landscape, the intended use of the space, and the level of architectural detail you want to achieve.

Bespoke builds are often best suited to:

Luxury cabin design for private clients seeking a one-of-a-kind retreat or guest space
Holiday cabin design for landowners looking to develop high-quality accommodation on their land
Bespoke glamping cabins and hospitality projects where strong design helps create a distinctive guest experience
Unique or challenging sites where terrain, access or planning constraints require a tailored architectural solution

Because each project is designed specifically for the site and client, bespoke cabins typically involve higher design investment and a longer design process than ready-to-build options. In some cases, particularly where access is limited or the location is remote, the build may also require on-site construction, which can add to project costs.

However, this approach allows for complete creative freedom and ensures the finished cabin is perfectly suited to its setting, use and vision. For many clients, the ability to create something entirely unique — thoughtfully designed and expertly built — makes bespoke cabin design the most rewarding route.

How long does it take to design and build a bespoke cabin?

The timeline for a bespoke cabin project will depend on the complexity of the design, planning requirements and site conditions. In many cases, the design and planning phases can take several weeks to a few months as concepts are developed, refined, approved and then prepared for construction.

Once the design is finalised and planning approved, the build process can vary depending on whether the cabin is constructed in our workshop and delivered to site or built directly on location. Larger or technically complex cabins may require additional time to ensure the finished space meets the highest standards of craftsmanship and build quality.

Bespoke cabin systems (if required)

For larger hospitality projects or bespoke glamping cabins, we can develop a design that can be repeated across multiple plots while maintaining a strong design identity. For great examples of this, you can see the A Frame cabins or the Wild By Nature cabins.

How much does a bespoke cabin design cost?

In most cases, a bespoke cabin build will involve a higher investment than our turn-key models such as the Signature Cabin, Stay Hut or Garden Cabins. Because each bespoke project is designed from scratch and tailored to a specific site, the design process, materials and build approach can vary significantly.

Several factors influence the overall cost of a bespoke cabin project, including:

Design and Architectural Fees
More technically complex projects, particularly those involving structural engineering, unusual forms or challenging sites, may require additional design, and engineering input. This ensures the cabin is not only beautiful but structurally sound and buildable.

Building Regulations
Our team can help guide your project through UK building regulations, ensuring your project meets all legal requirements smoothly and efficiently.

Planning Support and Consultancy
If your project requires planning guidance or a formal application, we can support you through the process with planning advice, planning drawings and consultancy where needed (additional charges may apply).

Materials and Specification
Many bespoke projects incorporate custom materials, specialist finishes, large glazing systems or unique architectural details. The choice of materials, windows, doors and engineering solutions will all influence the final project cost.

Build Method and Site Conditions
Where possible, our cabins are constructed in our workshop and delivered to site using a HIAB vehicle and crane. However, if access is restricted, the cabin exceeds transport limits, or the location is particularly remote, an on-site build may be required. This can increase costs due to extended build time, logistics, accommodation and travel for the build team.

Site Preparation and Groundworks
Ground conditions, foundations and access routes can also affect project costs. Sloped terrain, difficult ground conditions or remote locations may require additional groundwork or infrastructure before installation.

Services and Utilities
If the cabin requires connections to water, power, drainage or renewable energy systems, these elements will also form part of the wider project budget.

While bespoke projects require greater investment and often involve a longer design process, they offer the opportunity to create a completely unique cabin tailored to your land, your vision and the way the space will be used.

Do I need planning permission for a bespoke cabin?

Planning permission requirements for cabins can vary depending on the size, location and intended use of the building. In some cases, smaller cabins used as garden rooms or ancillary spaces may fall under permitted development, while cabins used for holiday accommodation or commercial use will usually require formal planning approval.

For landowners looking to develop holiday cabins or bespoke glamping cabins, planning considerations are an important part of the early project stages. We can offer guidance and connect clients with planning consultants where required to help navigate the process.

Can you design cabins for difficult or remote sites?

Yes. Many of our bespoke cabin design projects are created specifically for challenging or remote locations where a standard cabin wouldn’t be suitable.

Sites with steep terrain, limited access, woodland settings or exposed landscapes often benefit from a design-led approach. By designing the cabin from scratch, we can adapt the structure, layout and build method to suit the specific conditions of the site. This might involve adjusting the building footprint, designing specialist foundations, or planning an on-site construction approach where delivery access is restricted.

In some cases, remote locations may require additional logistical planning for materials, equipment and the build team. However, with careful design and coordination, these challenges can often be turned into opportunities to create truly distinctive cabins that sit beautifully within their landscape.

We regularly work with private clients, estates and landowners developing cabins in rural or hard-to-access locations, helping transform complex sites into exceptional spaces. Some examples can be seen with the off-grid woodland cabin and the Wilding Airfield.

What is the difference between bespoke cabins and ready-to-build cabins?

The main difference lies in the level of design flexibility and customisation.

Bespoke cabins are designed entirely from scratch, allowing the building to be tailored to the site, the intended use and the client’s vision. This approach offers complete creative freedom and is ideal for unique locations or projects where a distinctive design is important.

Ready-to-build cabins, on the other hand, are proven designs that have already been developed and refined. These models can usually be delivered more quickly and at a lower cost while still offering a high-quality architectural space.

Many clients choose bespoke cabin design when they want a fully personalised space, while ready-to-build cabins provide a faster route to installation.

Can bespoke cabins be used for glamping or holiday accommodation?

Yes. Bespoke cabin design is particularly well suited to glamping sites, retreats and holiday accommodation developments.

For hospitality projects, bespoke cabins allow the design to reflect the character of the landscape and the brand experience you want to create for guests. This can include developing unique layouts, distinctive architectural features and interiors that elevate the guest experience.

We regularly work with landowners, hospitality businesses and retreat operators to design bespoke glamping cabins and holiday cabins that combine thoughtful design with practical build solutions.

Can cabins be designed for woodland or rural land?

Yes. Cabins are often particularly well suited to woodland and rural settings, as they can be designed to sit lightly within the landscape and complement the natural surroundings.

With bespoke cabin design, the building can be carefully shaped around the character of the land — considering factors such as orientation, views, tree coverage, access and ground conditions. This allows the cabin to feel integrated with the environment rather than imposed upon it.

Woodland or rural sites can sometimes present additional considerations, such as access constraints, foundations, utilities and planning permissions. However, these challenges can often be addressed through thoughtful design and careful site planning.

At Life Space Cabins, we regularly work with private clients and landowners looking to develop cabins on rural or woodland land, creating spaces that respect the landscape while delivering practical, beautifully crafted accommodation.
