FAQ

Your Brief: Bespoke Design Life Space Cabins

We are a design and build company specialising in smaller spaces.

We’ve pulled together some FAQs around building a modern cabin to help you get started.

What makes Life Space Cabins different?

We work with you fom start to finish. We offer a range of services working with the best talent for each project in hand. We can offer site and feasibility visits, full design service, business planning and complete or partial build. Our knowledge of the sector is second to none and we are always looking to work with people who want to have fun with a playful way of thinking.

I don’t have a big budget, what can I expect?

We hope we have designed cabins for a range of budgets but by contacting us we will offer guidance on helping you choose the right cabin for your site and budget.

In 2024 we launched two new smaller spaces called Hide Hut and Potager Hut.  Two small modern designs with all of Life Space’s signature design and quality details but at an affordable cost.

Can you give me a guide price for a well considered bespoke cabin to fit my brief?

Each project is unique to its location and client specification so we price our work individually. As a guide from £30000+vat per square metre. But this cost depends on current material costs, client specifications and you will need to consider additional costs such as ground works, installation costs, design fees, planning application and project management costs depending how much you want to get us involved.

Will I need to consider planning permission to build a cabin?

This all depends on the size of the space, the location and end use. But typically cabins within the domestic curtilage don’t require planning permission as Permitted Development allows you to build (within a strict criteria) without a full planning application. There are some exceptions please read on further. Life Space Cabins can support you in obtaining planning permission but we are not planning ‘experts’ so where required we may bring in a planning consultant to advise. We have written a couple of posts for guidance.

What about Building Regulations? Do I need them for my small space or cabin?

Building control is separate to planning and you must check if you need approval before you construct or change buildings in certain ways. We have put together information on building regulations for cabins and small spaces over on our stories page.

How do you install the cabin?

We will take full responsibility for installing your cabin. Where possible our cabins are carefully built by our cabin creators in our workshop in South Devon and are ready for delivery to your site, assuming your site can be accessed by a low bed HIAB lorry. On most occasions this can be completed in a single day minimising onsite labour costs and disruption. However every project is different and some aspects can be site specific and will need a unique solution. Such as The Off-Grid Dart Cabin which was made and lifted into site in four separate modules. Clever stuff.

I am looking to diversify my land and business. Can you give me some details about building multiple cabins for my glamping venture and the kind of ROI I might expect?

As part of our service, we can offer a feasibility service which will cover the viability of your project as a whole. We will give guidance on various items including site configurations, access and infrastructure, cabin design and build, ROI, right through to guest experience. We will recommend guidelines and give indicative quotes from professional team members and industry professionals from our trusted bank of contacts needed throughout the project going forward. There is the opportunity for you to use the piece of work for any planning application or business plan.

Get in touch to speak to one of our team about getting a quote and proposal sent over.

What do I need to consider when fitting a wood burning stove or Log Burner in my small space / cabin?

We have teamed up with West Country Stoves who have written a really useful blog post on choosing the right stove for your small space or cabin plus some hugely helpful top tips around the safety aspects. Read it on our stories page.
