Garden Cabins FAQ

We’ve pulled together the most frequently asked questions about our Huts and the buying journey.

Please take a few moments to read through them, as they contain important information that will help you understand the product, pricing, and installation process.

Is the estimate given on the form a fixed quotation?

No. The price generated by this configurator is intended as a guide and provides an estimated cost based on any current options you have selected.

Following your enquiry, we will review your georgraphical location, requirements, site conditions, access arrangements, and any additional options before preparing a detailed quotation. This allows us to ensure the proposed Hut is suitable for your needs and that all costs are accurately reflected.

No order is confirmed until a formal quotation has been issued and accepted.

Do you do site visits?

In the first instance we will ask you for photos and videos of your garden and access. Google street view is also a really useful tool.

In order to keep the cost of the Hut as low and affordable as possible we have excluded this cost from the hut. So in the first instance we would suggest that you send us a series of photos and narrated videos to show access from the roadside, highlighting narrow sections and changes in height. When on the proposed site please stand in the centre of where the Hut will be located and spin around 360.

If we still have questions or concerns then we can arrange for one of our team to visit. Costs will apply to cover our time and mileage and will be quoted separately.

What are the internal measurements

We allocate up to 200mm for the wall buildup, which includes insulation, battens, and the internal ply finish.

For example a 4m length Hut, the interior dimensions are approximately W 2.36m x L 3.8m.

We recommend waiting until your hut is fully constructed before purchasing any furniture to ensure a proper fit within the space.

Does the Hut require foundations?

A suitable foundation system is essential to ensure your Hut is level, stable, and has adequate airflow beneath the building.

To provide an accurate estimate, all prices generated by our configurator automatically include a ground screw foundation system installed by our approved contractor. In most situations, ground screws are our preferred solution as they are quick to install, minimise site disruption, require very little excavation, and offer a more environmentally friendly alternative to concrete. They are also particularly effective on sloping or uneven sites.

If you already have an existing foundation, such as a concrete plinth or slab, we may be able to reuse it. During the consultation process, we will review any existing foundations and, where suitable, adjust your quotation accordingly

Do you work nationwide?

Absolutely! We would love to have one in every corner of the UK.

The final delivery and installation cost will depend on your location, site access, accommodation requirements, and the size of your Hut. Projects located further from South Devon, in areas with higher accommodation costs, or requiring special travel arrangements will incur additional charges.

Once we have reviewed your postcode and project requirements, we will provide a detailed quotation for delivery and installation before any order is confirmed.

Installation and Delivery

Delivery and installation costs are not included in the estimated price generated by this configurator.

Our workshops are based in South Devon, and each Hut is delivered as a series of panels and components before being assembled on site by our team, typically over the course of a week.

The final delivery and installation cost will depend on your location, site access, accommodation requirements, and the size of your Hut. Projects located further from South Devon, in areas with higher accommodation costs, or requiring special travel arrangements will incur additional charges.

Do the Garden Cabins require planning permission??

The Potager Hut and Hide Hut’s are designed to qualify as an outbuilding under permitted development regulations. This typically means you won’t need planning permission, provided the space is for personal use and located within your domestic curtilage.

The Potager Hut, due to its external dual-pitch height of 3.9m, requires it to be be situated at least 2 metres away from your boundary.

Read more here. https://www.planningportal.co.uk/permission/common-projects/outbuildings/planning-permission and via this handy this PDF

Variations to this could be if you are in a conservation area, Natural Landscape, your home is a Listed Building or similar.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have correct permissions for your Hut.

If you do need to submit a planning application then we can assist with drawings* to support the application. (*fees apply) We can also quote for a full planning application service or suggest if a planning consultant is required.

Access for installation

In order for us to be able to physically install your Hut we require something called a Construction Zone. This is minimum of 1 metre around a Potager Hut and a minimum of 50cm for a Hide Hut to allow our team to assemble the roof and clad the hut safely. We will ask for photos and measurements of your garden and proposed Hut location and can advise accordingly. Sometimes it’s simply the case of moving the orientation of the hut to give this space required.

In terms of access to the garden, in an ideal world you will have a rear garden gate and off road parking. But we realise that is not always the case!

Where you only have access through the house or narrow side access and street parking, the sooner we know about this the better as we can give our team the heads up to find a solution.

Remember, although our team is clean and polite they cannot manage the weather so protective floor covering should go down before we arrive.

If parking is on the street we will ask you to arrange up to 2 visitor permits for the time we are with you.

Electrics

Mains Power to your Hut from your house will need to be arranged by yourself.

The Hut price will include 6 double sockets outlets (first fix electrics) shown below, ready for your own electrician to complete the second fix face plates and subsequently connect to the mains power.

Backbox visual first fix electrics

Is there any lighting in the Hut?

We tend to find light fittings are a very personal choice so by providing 6 double socket outlets you can choose your own free standing wall lights and lamps.

Our design team is more than happy to suggest some suppliers if you need inspiration.

Internet Connection

Your electrician will be able to arrange this at the same time as providing power to the Hut.

Heating your Hut.

Our Huts are built to a very high standard using 100mm insulation and therefore should give you a comfortable temperature through the year. However for those colder days and if you are predominantly using the space as an office (and therefore sitting down for long periods) then you could plug in a wall hung electric radiator.

The Hut has a unique construction style, so it’s not designed to support a woodburner.

Is the insulation good?

Yes! We use 100mm thick Rockwool insulation, which provides excellent thermal, acoustic, and fire performance. It is rated Euroclass A1 non-combustible, ensuring high safety and efficiency.

How do I ventilate my Hut?

Thanks to the high levels of insulation used throughout the Hut, the internal temperature should remain comfortable and consistent throughout the year.

Factors that can influence the temperature include the orientation of the building and the amount of glazing selected. Larger areas of glazing will increase solar gain, helping to warm the space naturally when exposed to direct sunlight.

Additional opening windows can improve ventilation, particularly when positioned to create cross ventilation, allowing fresh air to flow through the building during warmer weather.

Can I change the orientation of the entrance door and have an extra window?

Absolutely!

Once we receive your enquiry, we will ask you to provide a few photographs of your garden. This allows us to better understand the site and advise on the most suitable positioning of windows and doors to make the most of the views, natural light, and privacy.

Some combinations of doors and windows may not be possible due to structural requirements—but don’t worry, we’ll guide you through the best options.

Our cabins are carefully engineered to ensure strength, safety, and longevity, which means certain window positions may be limited depending on your chosen door layout. If a specific combination isn’t feasible, our team will work with you to find the closest alternative that still achieves your vision.

Can the Hut be off-grid?

To create an off-grid space requires a bespoke and often site-specific solution and can more than double the cost of a space and the Hut is designed to be an affordable space so is not suitable for off-grid options.

What additional costs do I have to consider?

  • Planning application fees- see Planning.
  • Ground screw are based on typical ground conditions and intended use. In some cases, longer screws or additional ground screws may be required to suit site specific ground conditions. If you intend to use your Hut as a gym or install particularly heavy equipment, we may recommend additional ground screws to provide enhanced support and load capacity.Any such requirements would be identified during the site review process and reflected in your final quotation.
  •  Further costs could also be in the form of groundworks, and site service connections. Although we don’t get involved in these aspects we are more than happy to speak to your contractor.

Does the Hut have an entrance step?

We do not provide a step with the Hut. However, we recommend using a timber sleeper or a similar material for this purpose. Since the Hut will be raised off the ground due to the ground screw foundations, adding a step can make access easier.

Can I have a sink in my Hut?

In theory yes, but we don’t get involved in water connections or fittings. You will need to find your own plumber to assist with this work.

We can supply construction drawings so they know where they can create holes and connections but we cannot guarantee the Potager Hut once a separate contractor has done the work.

What Guarantees/ Warranties does the Hut come with?

We’re confident that all our Life Space Cabins are built to last and our Hide Hut and Potager Huts are no different.

We offer a 1 year warranty. This covers any defects that have occurred that are associated with the integrity of the building. If after this time you experience a problem then please do make contact with photos and order information and that we can guide you.  We will not cover wear and tear or where another contractor has worked on the building. We have chosen materials and adopted a robust construction system for great performance and longevity. The roofing membrane comes with a 50-year life expectancy for the ultimate peace of mind.

How long will my Garden Cabin last?

At least 25 years. We go by the mantra, do one thing and do it well. All our cabins arebuilt to last by using modern methods of construction, excellent insulation levels and high-quality materials.

Have a read of our sustainable build practices here https://lifespacecabins.co.uk/about-us/sustainable-construction/

What is the maintenance of my Hut?

By using natural materials like UK larch and durable metals like currugated steel their long-term durability is very good and as long as you don’t have anything leant up against the external walls then they will require minimal maintenance. We suggest keeping an air gap under the hut clear to allow the floor structure to have ventilation and to avoid planting too close to the timber cladding to allow it to dry out between rain showers.

We will provide our cabin/hut care and maintenance guide for complete instructions.

I’m ready to order, what happens next?

We ask you to complete the configurator form on the webpage.

This will capture our choices including hut size and external material choices. It will give you a base cabin cost. Once submitted we will come back to you requesting your postcode and a few site details including videos and photos.

Once we have this information we can create a quote and design visualisation showing your choices for approval and sign off.
