Life Space Cabins are delighted to launch The Dart – our new, self-contained cabin. The Dart is a modular built, insulated cabin for work, stay or play.
The Dart cabin has been designed to be used as an insulated garden office; luxury living space; creative studio; home gym or self-contained annexe. For commercial clients, it can be used as a top-quality glamping unit.
We have created The Dart in response to our clients’ desire for playful, functional spaces that can be used for a range of different purposes. The Dart evokes the magic of childhood dens, it is a special place in which to relax, connect with nature and feel inspired.
The Dart comes in five different lengths and is a customisable cabin with a range of exterior claddings, internal layouts, materials and features to choose from. This flexibility ensures that our customers can put their unique stamp on it and don’t have to compromise.
Jamie Wilson, our founder, says;
“The Dart gives the client the opportunity to put their unique mark on the project. We work closely with each client to put their choices together, they can choose from our pre-described options or go fully bespoke. This is what makes us unique”
Whether a domestic or commercial client, you can feel assured that – like all of our cabins – The Dart is built to exceptionally high standards, presenting a long-term investment.
As cabin designers and makers, we pride ourselves on attention to detail in the build and on offering a superior specification. For example, our insulation levels in The Dart meet the current requirements of a house to ensure maximum comfort and thermal efficiency.
How Will You Use Your Dart?
The Dart Stay – a self-contained living space or annexe
The Dart can sleep up to 4 adults making it an ideal living space, luxury annexe, glamping pod or holiday let. Staying in The Dart can be a magical experience as every inch of space is used playfully and cleverly but without sacrificing comfort, warmth and practicality. The Dart Stay has a cozy mezzanine sleep deck, a bathroom and a kitchen fitted with appliances. It’s a beautiful space that enhances and complements any environment it is placed in.
Potential VAT saving on The Dart Stay
If your Dart Stay can be classed as a caravan, we only need to charge 5% VAT (saving you 15%!) on all aspects of the cabin construction work. To qualify, it must fall within certain definitions and sizes (exceeding either 7 metres in length or 2.55 metres in width) and have a kitchen, bathroom, dining and sleeping space. We will advise when we know more about your project.

How did The Dart come about?
The story behind The Dart Cabin is a special one for us. We created our first Dart cabin for a local client, Andy, who was looking to create a contemporary cabin for living accommodation in South Devon.
Our first design began as a dual pitch roof but we quickly realised that a barrel-vaulted roof gave more space upstairs in the mezzanine sleep deck, which was the tightest part of the design. The Dart’s roof is partially inspired by Dutch barns and also gives a nod towards shepherd’s huts, but on a much grander scale!
We took our first concept to the creative team of talented engineers that Life Space Cabins collaborate with. They designed it as a modular built, CNC construction with machine cutting to streamline the building phase. But you’d never know, as the exterior cladding, fittings and finish can be totally bespoke. This means that for most projects the Dart can be built in our workshop and delivered to your site for minimal disruption.
When it comes to the planning process, The Dart can present a planning opportunity, as we discovered after taking the advice of an expert planning consultant on our first Dart build. Due to its specification it can be classed as a caravan and annexe (and is building regs compliant). But once it has been permanently lived in for four years, and if it will continue to be lived in, you may be able to apply retrospectively for it to become a permanent dwelling, therefore significantly increasing its value. With all of our cabin projects, we assess planning carefully on a case-by-case basis, providing our own experienced guidance and always bringing in an expert if required.
A Beloved Devon Dart
Andy’s Dart cabin became a much-loved haven for him during lockdown and he sends us regular updates to tell us how much he is enjoying cabin life. He is always happy to recommend us to other clients, saying “if you want build quality and attention to detail from a reputable trustworthy family business. This is it… I love it.”
Andy’s positive feedback on The Dart made us realise what huge potential the cabin had. Read more about Andy’s Dart Cabin here
Features of the Dart
The Dart is prefabricated at our Devon site. We can deliver it fully built to your site. Our experts install and commission the cabin so you can start enjoying it immediately. The Dart is building regs compliant and thanks to its curved roof, usually falls within the planning criteria of a caravan or permitted development.
The Dart is our ‘off the peg’ cabin but you can unleash your creativity by customising the finish and functionality to your own specific needs and tastes. Choose a shaker-style or contemporary kitchen; install a log-burner; add a mezzanine sleep deck; upgrade to underfloor heating or add bespoke elements – it’s a chance to put your unique stamp on it.
With its curved corrugated tin roof, stunning larch cladding and large aluminium-framed windows and doors, The Dart Cabin is both inspiring and inviting. It complements the natural landscape and weathers beautifully over time. At Life Space Cabins we use the highest-quality materials for aesthetics and durability. The Dart is built to evolve with you.
The Dart – Planning guidelines
Planning can feel daunting but don’t let it phase you, we’re here to guide our clients through the process and The Dart may even provide a planning opportunity. We’ve got lots of information on our website, including our latest planning blog. If you have a specific project in mind, we will discuss planning considerations with you during our initial consultations.
What’s next for the Dart Cabin?
We are in the process of constructing a Dart office in our workshop currently (follow the story on Instagram @lifespacecabins) plus several other Dart projects are underway for clients at different stages of design and planning.
We know this special design will be a popular choice for our discerning customers so we’re already exploring ways to expand the range – this includes investigating the options of a double width Dart and also a dual pitch roof Dart. The latter would allow for flat pack delivery and construction on site. This could work well for tricky site access in urban areas or via tight country lanes!
We’ll keep you posted.
