Beauty in Simplicity

This Riverside Summer House Cabin was created for a private client in Devon. The original brief was to create a flexible and beautiful place to enhance the garden and soak up the tremendous views of the River Yealm.

The cabin’s intended use was for a summer social bar area or occasional sleeping den (in case of an over indulgent summer lunch). The summer house cabin is broken into two spaces: An insulated enclosed space, designed to be a retreat on cooler days, this space is fully insulated using 125mm Structurally Insulated Panel or SIPs for short.  The summer house cabin then has the benefit of a covered veranda with oak decking for alfresco dining or socialising. This area gives reassurance and protection from South Devon’s inclement weather. There is an additional feature of this cabin by extending the eaves of the one side of the roof we were able to create a log store area.

The practicalities

The Riverside cabin took approximately 4 weeks in total to construct and we were able to reuse the foundation pad of a previous outbuilding. Delivery and Access into the site was particularly challenging and was achieved via multiple deliveries and a small army of helpers from Carpenter Oak to aid carrying the materials and sections into the site via several flights of steps! We will alway organise a site visit as soon as possible!

Interior Finish

The interior was finished using pre painted fine sawn horizontal boarding in front of a black membrane battened off the SIP panel. Rationel Domus joinery was used finished in Slate grey RAL 7015.

Exterior Finish

The summer house was built around the beautiful oak frame structure supplied by Carpenter Oak The oak frame was then wrapped in an 'over coat' of SIPs. Up to this point, the elements were prefabricated off site, aiding the swift progress on site. The exterior of the cabin was then wrapped in a breather membrane and clad in larch weather boarding to the walls, soffits and facias under a natural slate roof. The roof was finished off using Lindab galvanised guttering and down pipes.
