For Mike and Vickie Ward they soon learnt that building their dream home was not for the faint hearted.
They wanted to avoid having to live in a caravan or mobile home during the self-build so along with Roderick James Architects and Carpenter Oak they came up with a plan…
Part of their plan was to build a micro cabin that was well insulated, beautiful and a sustainable construction that they could live in comfortably whilst the rest of the house was being built.
The best bit about this plan was that the cabin would eventually become part of the final house. Genius.
With the cabin going up in a matter of weeks it enabled them to gain a ‘preview’ of life in the rest of the house, A fantastic way to experiment with what works and what doesn’t.

The Self Builders Journey

The Dream was to find a place where Mike could work from home and Vickie could grow her tiny but successful artisan cheesemaking business.

Throughout the project build, Vickie kept a blog to record the developments from pile of building materials to home. In her own works Vickie describes the journey with images and snippets of brilliant information that all self builders should consider when starting their own project.

Lessons were learnt along the way alongside amazing craftsmanship, all kinds of trades who helped achieve the dream of enabling them to stay Off Grid.

Off Grid

Easterdown is a 9 acre organic smallholding with planning permission to replace the existing house. Easterdown was off grid when they bought it and they chose to remain that way using a combination of solar panels, batteries, modern electronics and a generator for backup power.

No mains electricity connection, their own well, cooking and heating with wood. By taking on the challenge to build and stay off grid they were able to buy much more land than they could have afforded otherwise.

What would living Off Grid mean?
