Architectural Design

The sky’s the limit. From a simple dream and sketch in a notepad to beautiful, practical architecture for life, we believe everything is possible when it comes to cabin design.

Our team of experienced designers, carpenters and project managers are dedicated to creating not only the most eye-catching cabins but also innovative, playful spaces that improve the way people live, work or play. Together under one roof in our South Devon workshop, we work collaboratively, finessing the build at every stage until the moment it’s placed on site.

Whether you’re looking for a cosy retreat in the woods, a spacious guest house, or a luxurious home away from home, we can bring your vision to life with our custom design and build service.

Bespoke architectural design is where it all began for us. We started Life Space Cabins to make good design available to everyone. Bringing carefully-considered, architectural details to smaller spaces in a completely new way.

Is bespoke design the right option for me?

By designing your cabin from scratch, everything is possible. With a bespoke build we can construct something perfect for your site and project without trying to fit to an already defined design. We love a good challenge, and have a solutions first mentality. If your site is particularly difficult to build on or the access is tricky, generally bespoke design will be the way forward. If you come to us with an idea for a three-storey tower cabin or a floating cabin, we’ll find a way to make it work. And make it work well. No idea is too small or too big. It doesn’t need to be fully fleshed out yet. Contact us and we’ll help you bring that concept to life.

Playful spaces

We want to work on fun projects with people who have ideas that call for dynamic thinking and creative solutions. Everything is possible.

Good design for everyone

Beyond the cabin’s foundation, architectural thinking runs through every element of the design. Right down to the smallest of details.

Connect with nature

Each build is grounded in sustainable design. When creating living spaces that make the most of the natural world, it only makes sense to use responsibly-sourced materials. We carefully choose our resources and while our designs are all about creativity, they’re also crafted sympathetically to work in harmony with their surroundings.

The custom design and build process

Every client is unique. That’s why we take a personalised approach to our bespoke cabin designs. The process begins with a consultation where we’ll identify the features and design elements most important to you and your budget. We then develop a plan that meets your vision. Where brief and budget offer a greater level of freedom, we’re more than happy to use our creativity to throw away the rulebook (within reason!) and create something remarkable.

Once we’ve established the design plan, our team of cabin creators get to work building your cabin. We’ll keep you updated on the progress along the way, and be there to celebrate with you at the grand unveiling.

01Your Vision

All our bespoke cabins start with an idea and a series of sketches. We love to use our creativity, design innovation and sense of fun to bring your vision to life.

02Defining the brief

Before we set our team of designers off on creating your perfect cabin, it’s important that we understand your requirements for the space.

Some of the questions we may ask:

  • What will you use your space for?
  • How big does it need to be?
  • Where is the location?
  • What is your project budget?
  • When would you like to see your dream cabin completed?

Once a brief is defined, we’ll create a proposal outlining fees, project stages and the overall process.

03Concept design

This is the stage where our designers work with you to bring those sketches to life. Your vision starts to feel very real. This is one of our favourite steps as the concept of something out-of-this-world is designed into actuality.

04Gaining the right permissions

There are various routes to get planning permission. These will vary based on geographical location, Local Authority and site feasibility.

We offer a light touch service where we use our experience to make an appropriate application for you. Where an application is beyond our level of expertise, we’ll recommend a third party planning consultant to guide us. This will give your project the best chance of gaining planning permission.

05Getting the technical specs right

Here we create a unique set of construction and detailing drawings. Because every bespoke build has some unique aspect to it, the design will need some in depth drawings to ensure every element is engineered to work. This also helps us accurately price for all parts of the project build so there’s no hidden surprises.

06Building the dream

With paperwork and designs all in place, we hand everything over to our own team of talented craftspeople and project managers. They take great pride in the cabins they create and will share updates along the way as they reach every exciting milestone in your cabin build.

07Installation & the ‘pinch-me’ moment

After we’ve crafted as much of your cabin as we can in the workshop, it’s time to head to site to start the installation. Normally this is quite a quick turnaround but this completely depends on the type of bespoke design.

Once we’ve fully installed your cabin and are confident our work’s done, it’s time to hand over the keys and relish in that moment where your vision becomes reality. Don’t worry, tears of joy are completely normal.
